As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Discussion Summaries

The journal will feature online discussion summaries for @Gijournal (GI Journal Club) and other Twitter platforms discussing new publications, best endoscopy practices, and other clinical questions. The manuscript will be limited to 2500 words, with an abstract of up to 250 words, up to 20 references, and 1–5 figures. 

Clinical Image/Video Challenge

The clinical image/video challenge provides an opportunity to publish interesting cases discussed on Twitter. This should include the case description followed by the image/video. The discussion should focus on differential diagnosis, clinical course, and a brief review of the literature. The endoscopic, radiographic, and pathology images should be colored and de-identified. . The submission may take the form of a case report or may illustrate particular features from more than one patient. The case presentation and discussion should be limited to 1000 words and should include an abstract of 200 words and up to 5 references. 

Crowd-Sourced Clinical Review

This category is open to narrative reviews on commonly encountered scenarios in the clinical practice of gastroenterology (such as treatment of gastric varices etc.). We encourage incorporating Twitter polls and survey reports in the discussion. The manuscript will be limited to 2000 words (unstructured format accepted). Up to 10 references and 1-3 figures and tables are allowed.  

Medical Education and Innovations in Clinical Education

This category includes articles pertaining to novel and innovative ways for improving education in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal endoscopy. Submissions in this section include formal educational curriculum reports, perspective/ opinion pieces pertaining to challenges in medical education, summarizing crowd-sourced discussions from social media platforms, survey reports, or any issues pertaining to GI trainees / fellows. High-quality preliminary reports and letters to editors will also be considered for this section. The maximum article length for this section will be 2000 words, and up to 10 references and 3 tables/figures. Tables / Figures are encouraged for this section. 

PREPARING THE SUBMISSION

The manuscript should be divided into 2 parts which should all be included in a single word document 

  1. Title Page

(i) A short informative title which should be less than 120 characters (including spaces)

(ii) The full names of the authors;

(iii) The author's institutional affiliations

(iv) The full postal and email address, plus telephone number, of the author to whom correspondence about the manuscript should be sent

(v) Keywords

(vi) Disclosure statement

(vii) Acknowledgements

(ii) Introduction (Article summary for #GIJC discussions)

(iii) Discussion

(iv) Conclusion

(v) References. We recommend using the Vancouver system for referencing. 

Figures and Tables should be references in the main text and should be placed in the main document with the figure legends. 

REVIEW PROCESS

All articles submitted to @Gijournal will undergo a single-blind peer-review process. After the initial screening by the section editor, the article will be sent for peer review utilizing an internal peer review system. Once the peer-review process is complete, the final proof will be sent to the corresponding author for approval. We expect the peer review process to not take more than 2 weeks.

How to Cite Articles Published in @Gijournal 

Articles in @Gijournal should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. The articles will be published online on an ongoing basis as they are accepted. Each article will be given a unique article number.

Article citations follow this format:

Authors: Title. @Gijournal [year], [volume number]:[article number].

e.g. John S, Smith J : Improved outcomes with using steroids for Crohn’s strictures. @Gijournal 2021, 1:1.

refers to article 1 from Volume 1 of the journal.
